CHICAGO – USL League Two’s Des Moines Menace and Little Rock Rangers learned their opponents in the Second Round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Friday, with the Menace’s veteran-laden squad handed a home draw at Valley Stadium.
The Menace will play host to the winner of Friday night’s opening round between USL League Two club Flatirons FC and current USL League One title-holder Union Omaha on Wednesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Des Moines advanced to the Second Round for a second consecutive year via a 2-1 victory against Sporting Kansas City II on Tuesday night behind a pair of goals by Sasha Kljestan. The squad of veterans – which also featured Dax McCarty, A.J. DeLaGarza, Matt Hedges and Benny Feilhaber – will now get to play on home turf as they try to send the club to the Third Round for the first time since 2016.
The Rangers, meanwhile, will head on the road to face FC Naples at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex on Wednesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET after claiming the club’s first victory in the Open Cup all-time with a 1-0 win against the USL Championship’s Birmingham Legion FC on Wednesday night.
Little Rock’s Caoimhin McConnell scored the only goal against Legion after Tomasz Wróbleski saved a first-half penalty kick, making the Rangers the lone side to advance past a USL Championship opponent in the First Round. Now the side will attempt to continue its run against the first-year League One club, which opened its Open Cup campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory against Sarasota Paradise of USL League Two behind a stoppage-time winner from Kevin O’Connor.
